Geospatial Technologies for the Environmental Studies Classroom
Summer Course for Alaska Teachers and High School Students
August 6-10, 2012 in Seward, Alaska

* Learn to navigate using GPS receivers
* Complete hands-on science labs
WHO: High School teachers of science, geography or technology AND 2 students from their school community (from their classroom in the Fall 2012)
COURSE DESCRIPTION: This integrated geospatial technology and environmental science course introduces educators and students to geospatial tools for use in their school community. Participants will learn the history, use and functionality of geospatial technologies (GPS, GIS, RS) with hands-on labs. Students will experience environmental science topics within the local landscape of Southeast Alaska. Topics of study may include: glaciation, cultural migration, oceanography, hydrology, estuaries, coastal succession, forestry/logging, geothermal studies, alpine systems, rainforests, streams, tidal systems, climate change, modern economics. Participants will complete an integrated project on-site in Seward during the August classroom experience and field trip that will serve as an exemplar for their community based project to be completed upon return to their home school community. Educators will complete integration plans and join a professional network of technology integration leaders across Alaska.
CREDIT: High School Students receive one semester science credit & Teachers receive 3 UAF credits, GEOG 595
